Waiting Behind the Gate

Waiting Behind the Gate

It has been nasty cold here in Seattle.  My family in Chicago thinks I’m just having a fine Washington whine, but really, Family…we don’t usually have freezing temperatures.    Dark, yes…wet, yes…kind of gloomy, well…yes.  That’s what we like!  The dogs, both rescues, have been fast-walking, not even bothering to sniff the doggie message boards.   Maddie, the pretty good Airedale, handles  the cold better than Enzo, the tiny terror from L.A.   I finally bought a little doggie coat for Enzo after many long and rather negative, “You’re not going to dress him up in clothes, are you?” discussions…an expensive and  bright-red plaid blankety thing which doesn’t seem to embarrass him and which makes me feel like a good and magnanimous dog owner.

I’ve piled all the acrylic paints in the middle of my unheated studio and covered said pile with several blankets.  I don’t know if this will keep the paint from getting “ropey” but I hope so.  The three space heaters I turn on when I get to the studio heat the place up to nearly bearable from totally intolerable  and that, along with chai from the Starbucks down the block , allows me to be somewhat productive.  Standing dead center of three heaters, I’ve been using oil pastels…too cold for those big sweeping arm gestures that are such a pleasant part of easel painting….
